Thinking about your summer holidays? Travelling can be stressful this time of year, especially if your decision to go was last minute or you didn’t plan ahead as well as you should have! We’ve put together our top tips to make travelling with your family a little bit easier and a lot less stressful.
Avoid peak travel times.
You know the sort: Paris on Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Spain in the peak of the summer—any place that seems really obvious at a busy time of year. For one, typically the flights at peak travel time will be a lot more expensive than if you went off-season. The airport will also be super busy too and checking in could be a nightmare with small children.
Sort your tickets out as early as possible.
Know where and when you want to go? Great! You’ll have an amazing time no doubt, whether that’s sunning yourself in the super chic Maldives or hitting the slopes in the Alps. Either way, make sure you book your tickets as early as possible. If you choose your timing right, you could save a small fortune and also snag better seats. It’s never too early to book your flights!
Look out for deals and check prices across lots of websites.
You might be tempted to snap up the first reasonable-looking offer you see, but your best bet is to shop around. During peak times in particular, you should visit as many travel agent websites (or travel agent shops!) as you can and really consider all your options. You don’t want to end up paying more than necessary because you were impatient.
Keep an eye on connections.
As we all know, lots of destinations involve catching a connecting flight. No one likes connecting flights as they involve a little extra stress and lots of clock-watching. When you’re booking your flights, make sure there’s a nice amount of time between connecting flights. If there’s a delay due to weather or whatever, you’ll want to know that you won’t miss your connecting flight!
Be clever about packing.
Lots of airlines have restrictions when it comes to how much stuff you can carry-on with you. Get to know the rules of the airline so you won’t end up paying any extra or having to check-in extra luggage.
When it comes to packing your family’s luggage, pack lightly. You don’t need everything and the kitchen sink! Research the weather and know what to expect. Your little one might think she’s going on a fashion parade, but she really doesn’t need half her clothes, for example. The same goes for mum and dad too! The less suitcases you need to lug around with you, the easier checking-in and general travelling will be!
Leave your house early.
Sure, no one likes to hear their alarm going off at 4am, but if you’re travelling, especially during peak times, the airport is going to be busy and full of long lines of people. Getting up early might make you grumpy but imagine how grumpy you’d be if you left it too late and you end up missing your flight!
Keep an eye on package deals.
Even if you normally wouldn’t dream of buying a package deal, it’s no harm keeping an eye on them. You never know, you might find some great deals packaged together, especially around the holiday travel times!
