If, like us here at Sand Dollar, you’re lucky enough to be leaving the cold and rain behind to go somewhere amazingly warm for Christmas, you’ll know how there are so many brilliant winter sun holidays to choose from. We’ve picked our favourite destinations for this list!
You might feel like you haven’t seen the sun for weeks. Here in Sand Dollar HQ, the weather has been very cold and very wet so we’re delighted to be heading off. So where’s hot in December and January? First up, we recommend one of our old favourites.
1. The Caribbean
The tropical islands in the Caribbean Sea are gorgeous all year round. They’re particularly gorgeous in the winter months because they’re a great balm to the cold! You’ll forget how cold home is very quickly as you lie out in the glorious weather or go travelling with your little ones across beautiful white sands. Keep in mind that winter is the peak season for travelling to the Caribbean, so they’ll be plenty of tourists everywhere.
Nassau and Freeport are easily the most popular destinations. Nassau is the capital city of the Bahamas and has miles of glorious beaches and watercolour coral reefs to go diving or snorkelling in. If you haven’t taken your little ones before, snorkelling will be a real adventure. The Bay Street is particularly busy and well worth a visit. Freeport, on the other hand, is just as gorgeous. Founded in 1955 as a centre of tourism, Freeport has pretty much everything you could ask for from golf for the budding Tiger Woods to boating, nightclubs, and fishing.
2. The Bermuda
While you might relate the Bermuda to the Bermuda triangle and disappearing people, it’s a wonderful place to visit on holiday. Bermuda is a colourful country, full of pink beaches and pink houses.
Bermuda is a unique place: relaxed charm but still chic and modern. The little ones in your family will particularly love the pirates cove and pink-sand. Mam and Dad will be delighted to hear that there’s no sales tax in the Bermuda, so it’s perfect for doing too much shopping!
3. Cambodia
If you live in western Europe, Cambodia is a bit of a trek. It’s a fourteen hour flight from London, so it’s not ideal for family. If you want a unique break for you and your partner, Cambodia is perfect.
The temples of Angkor are an absolute must and are worth the fourteen hour trek. See the Taj Mahal by moonlight or watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat for a gorgeous, romantic experience. As well as the architecture, Cambodia has a bustling city, curious villages, and a relaxed capital city of Phnom Penh. If you want to lie back and relax, the amazing beaches are just perfect for chilling out with your other half or your girlfriends.
4. The Canary Islands
No matter which of the Canary Islands you choose, you’re in for a beautiful holiday. We recommend just about any of them, though if you want to go somewhere less crowded and smaller, Sand Dollar recommends La Palma or La Gomera.
The islands are all beautiful and visiting any of the smaller ones will get you away from the crazy bustle. The hotels in the smaller islands aren’t as grand or luxurious, but the gorgeous, untouched landscape makes up for it. La Palma or La Gomera is perfect for a romantic getaway that’ll be a little bit cheaper but just as stunning!
